The cork is harvested from the cork oak tree, "Quercus suber", which grows in portugal and other countries which border the western edge of the mediterranean basin. Bark is taken from the tree in 9 to 10 year cycles. Typically, each tree will be extracted from between 15 and 20 times in its lifetime.
